How to check if there are Dust Mites at Home

First published: 20 January 2021 @ 3:18 pm

The first thing to do is to inspect your mattress and pillow. If you find tiny brown dots, it is probably the feces of dust mites and, therefore, an indication of an active dust mite infestation.

To see whether you have a Dust Mite problem, place a white sheet on your bed and a black light (fluorescent) or night light. Then, turn off all the lights in the room and wait for about 10 minutes.

If there are any dead or living Dust Mites present, they will cast a blue-greenish glow under the black light due to their exoskeleton glowing under the UV ray of the black light. It is called the “Black Light” Inspection method.

How to get rid of Dust Mites at home?

1) Remove carpeting

Carpeting can be bad for allergy sufferers because it increases humidity in your home. It also collects dust and other allergens on its surface, which you track from outside with each step.

The microorganisms multiply by feeding off these allergens trapped in your carpeting fibers, so not only are they annoying, but they can also contribute to asthma attacks and allergies when not properly managed.

You should do a complete carpet cleaning once every year, but usually, that’s not enough time for dust mites and other allergens that have attached themselves to the fibers to die off completely.

Before new ones flourish again during summertime or wintertime, pollen levels get higher than usual (depending on where you live).

Another reason you need carpeting removed is that this will allow better ventilation into your home, which will help reduce humidity levels and reduce mold growth.

Here’s how you can remove carpeting from your home: Hire professional carpet cleaners who will steam clean your carpets using only hot water (which means no chemicals are used).

This way, harmful chemicals won’t pollute indoor air quality even further, especially if people are already suffering from respiratory problems living in your home.

Then get rid of old rugs, carpets & any fabric floor coverings by donating them to charity stores or just throwing them out, as many charity stores don’t accept rug donations because they are often laden with mites & other allergens due to excessive use & exposure over many years

– they would then resell these rugs/carpets again without removing all traces of allergens from them, so again, it would still pose a health risk even if you donated the rugs to charity.

2) Air Purifiers

You can also choose a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter or an air purifier that uses HEPA filters.

Some vacuum cleaners also use a special UV-C. (ultraviolet-C) light to kill airborne dust mites. It is suggested that you vacuum your home every other day, especially in bedrooms, and change the filter every three months.

3) Bedding

Wash all of your bedding, including sheets, blankets, and pillows, regularly (at least once a week) using hot water and detergent (or just throw them away) if you can’t find a way to clean them. It will help you to prevent dust mites from living in your bedroom.

4) Use an air purifier in the bedroom

Air purifiers will purify the air by trapping and removing airborne allergens like dust mites from the air. It is the most effective way to eliminate dust mites from your indoor air supply.

There are two main types of central air purifiers – filters with HEPA technology & UV-C light cleaners (used with HEPA filters). UV-C light is a technology that has been used successfully by NASA to sterilize the air in its craft. It has been shown to kill dust mites and other microorganisms.

It is expensive to buy a UV-C purifier. But if you decide to use one, make sure you use it regularly for at least two months to not shock anyone sensitive to cold by suddenly being exposed to it.

5) Steam Clean Floors/Walls

Clean floors/walls using the steam cleaning method as this will extract Dust Mites out of carpets and kill them off by using heat/steam, which dries up their bodies into dead husks.

Having clean floors/walls makes it easier for allergy sufferers to breathe better because fewer allergens are floating around.

6) Remove Light Fixtures/Clutter

Dust Mites love dark places, so eliminating clutter & removing light fixtures will reduce their population around you (especially while sleeping).

7) Use HEPA Filters on Fans

HEPA filters are installed in fans that help to filter air in your home and help to keep dust mites from entering your home.

Fan switches also come with built-in ionizers, so having one on low speed while sleeping is another way to get rid of Dust Mites!
