What should you do when the check engine light shows?

The check engine light is a warning light that is illuminated when a fault is detected by the OBD computer and stored in the computer’s memory. This is a fault that the vehicle manufacturer recommends you have checked out by a professional. The check engine light can illuminate for different reasons, depending on the vehicle.

Common causes

The check engine light is most commonly triggered by the following issues:

1. Fuel Injectors: fuel injectors are responsible for delivering the right amount of fuel at the right time. When the fuel injectors are not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

2. Oxygen Sensors: oxygen sensors measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust and send the information to the OBD computer. The computer uses this information to adjust the air/fuel mixture. When the oxygen sensor is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

3. Ignition System: the ignition system is responsible for igniting the fuel. When the ignition system is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

4. Air Intake: a build-up of dirt or debris can prevent the air intake from operating properly. When the air intake is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

5. Mass Air Flow Sensor: the mass airflow sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine. When the mass airflow sensor is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

6. O2 Sensor: the oxygen sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust and sends the information to the OBD computer. The computer uses this information to adjust the air/fuel mixture. When the oxygen sensor is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

7. Engine Coolant Temperature: the engine coolant temperature sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of heat generated by the engine. When the engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

8. Throttle Position Sensor: the throttle position sensor measures how far the throttle is open. When the throttle position sensor is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

9. Crankshaft Position: the crankshaft sensor measures the position of the crankshaft and sends information to the OBD computer. The computer uses this information to determine how much air/fuel mixture the engine should receive. When the crankshaft sensor is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.

10. Camshaft Position: the camshaft sensor measures the position of the camshaft and sends information to the OBD computer. The computer uses this information to determine how much air/fuel mixture the engine should receive. When the camshaft sensor is not working properly, the check engine light may be illuminated.
