Neutral color palettes are classic and enduring. Neutral colors make a space feel comfortable and inviting, but if you’re ready to give your neutral room a facelift, these tips will help you create a unique and inviting space that stands out from the crowd.
1. Think about texture. A neutral room is the perfect canvas for introducing different textures into your space. It’s important to choose textures that won’t overpower the space, however.
Consider adding velvet pillows or textured fabrics like corduroy or velveteen in lieu of larger furniture pieces with lots of texture like carved wood or animal print upholstery.
2. Choose complementary colors to create contrast. Neutral rooms are a great place to play with color because they won’t overwhelm your color palette when you decide to add new pieces in bold hues like red, orange, or purple. Keep your existing furnishings neutral so they don’t clash with the new pieces you add later on.
3. Pick a color scheme that works with your existing furniture or flooring, not against it. This can be tricky if you have light-colored floors and white walls because it can be hard to find paint colors that don’t look too dark.
Instead, try using a lighter shade of your existing wall color or add in other neutrals like light blue or light gray to complement the space.
4. Consider adding pattern. Even though you want to keep your neutral room neutral, adding in small patterns like geometric shapes or subtle stripes can make a big difference.
Keep the patterns small and subtle so they don’t overpower the space, but make sure they’re large enough to be noticed when people walk into the room.
5. Choose a focal point that stands out from the rest of the room. A bright rug, bold art piece, or colorful throw pillow can draw attention to one specific area of your neutral room without detracting from its overall look and feel.
Make sure that whatever you choose as your focal point fits with the rest of your neutral palette so it doesn’t stand out for all the wrong reasons!
6. Try adding texture with accessories instead of larger pieces of furniture. It can be tempting to buy lots of colorful furniture when you want to liven up a neutral room, but resist this urge!
